Goldsmiths College has an international reputation as the incubator
of British art at a time when the UK leads contemporary art throughout
the world. We also excel in the teaching of the humanities, social
sciences, design and education and received excellent scores in
the most recent assessment of the research quality in higher education
institutions (Research Assessment Exercise).
The College has undergone rapid expansion over the last two decades
and was in need of studio and teaching accommodation in order
to retain this status.
Alsop & Partners (then Alsop Architects) were appointed after
an open international competition in January 2002 to develop an
overall vision for the much needed additional accommodation. Covering
2,700 sqm the new building brings together the Visual Arts, Computing
and Psychology Departments.
Interdisciplinarity between departments is a particular area
of focus for the future so as well as teaching and studio facilities,
the new building also incorporates purpose designed labs for a
cutting edge new research unit called the Centre for Cognition,
Computation and Culture. Centre brings together expertise from
the social sciences, computing, art and design. Another new addition
to the College enabled by the new building, is Goldsmiths Digital
Studios.
