Look kindly on your first drafts. Or, I should say, 'listen' carefully to what they are trying to say. Who are these characters? What is it they want to say? Why do they want this story to be told? Redrafting, for me, is not only about editing, rearranging words on the page, pressing the delete key etc. It's about hearing the voices of the characters, getting their presence on the page. Even the messiest first draft has something to take you forward. So treasure them, don't trash them. Pamela Johnson My advice to aspiring authors: to read widely; to rewrite - and rewrite the rewrites; to find a friend, or group, who can give you feedback; and to be patient. Blake Morrison |
| Goldsmiths College, located in Southeast London, is home to the Creative and Life Writing MA Programme that sponsors Goldfish Magazine. The MA programme challenges committed writers to explore their potential and examine their work in a constructive environment. The course is unique in that it combines Creative and Life Writing, and encourages prose and poetry.
Goldfish has, in previous years, existed as an online journal in which members of the MA program can display their work. This year, we have restructured this outlet with hopes that Goldfish will reach new goals in all facets of the literary industry. We have adopted a general theme to encourage cohesion among the submissions, but each writer has interpreted it with creative individuality. This umbrella theme is 'clichés,' and the pieces are divided into the three following phrases: » 'Swings and roundabouts' » 'Sticks and stones'. » 'A shot in the dark' Please feel free to jump around as you'd like, and we sincerely hope that you enjoy Goldfish Magazine, 2005! |
